What is an international driving permit (IDP)?

An International Driving Permit (IDP), also known as an international driver’s license, is a permit that translates your driver’s license into the language of the foreign country you are visiting. It is also a United Nations-regulated travel document that is valid in more than 150 countries.

Why do I need an IDP?

An IDP allows you to drive in multiple countries. It's often a lot cheaper than getting a new driver’s license in your host country, since you don't need to know the language or pass any tests. It also makes communication easier between yourself and police or fellow motorists.

How can I obtain an IDP?

You must have a valid driver’s license to obtain an IDP.

Step 1: Choose a service provider from our list of international driving permit agencies.

Step 2: On the agency’s website, choose a plan. Plans and pricing vary depending on validity period, covered jurisdictions, and whether you need a digital or printed permit.

Step 3: Fill out the application form. Input the same personal information and vehicle preferences you have used on your native driver’s license.

Step 4: Submit your documents by uploading them to the agency’s website.

Step 5: Pay your fees to complete the application. Most service providers accept credit card, debit card, mobile payment, wire transfer, and more.

Step 6: Wait for your digital and/or printed permit. Digital permits are usually sent to your email in a matter of hours. On the other hand, hard copies may take longer to process, depending on the agency’s courier service.

Can someone apply for an IDP on my behalf?

Yes, as long as your chosen representative has a signed authorization letter and the necessary documents. If pressed for time, you can also apply online.

Where can I use an IDP?

IDPs are valid in over 150 countries that signed the United Nations Convention on Road Traffic. The list of countries accepting IDPs is usually on the back of the IDP.

Can I drive to my destination country with just an IDP?

IDPs alone are not valid for driving. You will also need the driver’s license that you used upon application. IDPs are also invalid in countries that did not sign the UN convention, such as the People’s Republic of China.

Does an IDP replace my native driver's license?

The IDP is not a replacement for your original driver's license. Depending on the issuing country, it is only valid for 1-3 years from the date of issue, or until your original license expires, whichever comes first.

What happens if I receive a traffic violation abroad?

If you get a violation abroad, your IDP will not be confiscated. However, you will still need to pay the fines or tickets imposed by the host country’s traffic enforcers. Failure to do so can lead to charges from your car rental company, or being denied entry in the host country the next time you visit.
