Frequently Asked Questions on VPNs for Mobile Phones

What should you know before using a VPN?

Secure connection with a mobile VPN is one of the most important things for a mobile user today. The most common type of VPNs used on smartphones is L2TP VPN. The biggest problem for the L2TP VPN is the restrictions on the type of protocol. It has to be supported by both the VPN server and the VPN client. If your VPN server doesn't support L2TP then you won't be able to connect through it.

Is it safe to use VPN on a phone?

Yes. It Is perfectly safe to use a VPN on your phone. That is, so long as you choose a trustworthy app. A quality VPN app will let you change the server through which you connect to the internet, in effect, masking your location. This can let you access content that's locked to certain regions, or maintain a degree of privacy while online.

What happens if we use VPN in mobile?

A virtual private network (VPN) conceals internet data traveling to and from your device. VPN software lives on your devices whether that's a computer, tablet, or smartphone. It sends your data in a scrambled format (this is known as encryption) that's unreadable to anyone who may want to intercept it.

Can VPN hack your phone?

It depends. You can never know exactly how secure a wireless network is, and connecting to it is often a leap in the deep. In any case, it is important to protect yourself against these break-ins, for example by means of a VPN connection. That way you enjoy mobile VPN security and it is almost impossible to hack your data.

How can you use VPN on mobile?

Step 1:

Open the Settings menu of the phone. Keep in mind that the instructions below may vary depending on what device you have.

Step 2:

Tap on Wi-Fi & Internet or Wireless & Networks. Basically, you need to go to the network settings page.

Step 3:

Tap on VPN. On some devices, you may need to expand the options by first tapping on More.

Step 4:

Tap on the plus sign at the top right corner. If you don’t see one, you will need to open the advanced options menu (usually by tapping on the three vertical dots icon).

Step 5:

Enter the necessary information like the server address, username, and password. This info will be provided to you by the network administrator.

Is a mobile VPN shareable to another mobile phone?

Yes. Just go to Settings > Network and Internet > Change adapter Options. Right-click on the new Adapter that appears after connecting to our VPN through the app and select Properties. Under the Sharing tab, check the box for Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection.

How to make the mobile phone’s VPN work faster?

A VPN is dependent on the speed of your connection to the Internet. Whatever the speed of the connection is, the VPN cannot be faster. In fact, you should expect a small loss in speed when connecting to any VPN service due to the software having to encrypt every packet of data. This loss should be small, usually 10-20% when compared with your connection without a VPN. If you have a persistent speed issue consider the following troubleshooting steps.

Step 1: Change servers

Selecting a server that is geographically close to you will normally result in increased performance (due to lower latency). In addition, changing to a server in another location may bypass any congestion issues depending on how close the congestion is to your location. See our server status page for a list of locations where we have servers.

Step 2: Change VPN port/protocol

Your VPN software connects to our servers on a specific port number using a specific protocol (UDP or TCP). Some networks restrict the speed of certain ports or protocols. Try changing the port/protocol until you identify the fastest combination. See how to change ports and protocols.

Step 3: Use a wired connection

Your speed may be limited by your Wi-Fi connection. Wireless connections rely on a shared channel to transmit data between multiple devices which may result in increased latency and slower speeds. Wired connections normally support much higher speeds and are always preferable if you have access to one.

Step 4: Switch devices

Certain devices are not capable of providing high speeds due to the heavy encryption overhead of a VPN tunnel. These devices often include routers, NAS, older Android devices and early generation iOS devices. If you are using one of these devices then your only solution is to switch to a device with a more capable processor.

Step 5: Restart your Modem/Router

Over time your modem or router may slow down due to memory leaks etc. Restarting your modem/router may increase the speed of your connection and thus the VPN.

Step 6: Try WireGuard

OpenVPN connections may be restricted or throttled on some networks. Using WireGuard may result in a faster connection. WireGuard is available on our native apps for macOS, iOS, Windows, Linux and Android.

Step 7: Temporarily disable local security software

Firewall or antivirus software can slow down VPN traffic by filtering or scanning outgoing packets. Try temporarily disabling your security software to determine if the security software is the cause of the performance issue.

Step 8: Restart your Device

Over time many devices experience “fatigue” due to running out of free memory or resources. Restarting your device may help your connection speed.

Step 9: Install the latest device updates

Install the latest device updates Check if your device has available firmware updates they might contain various fixes and improve the general performance and quality of the connection after installing it.

Step 10: Connecting from another location

It may be that there is an issue with your connection to your ISP. You can easily check this by connecting to the Internet from another location: Coffeeshop / Neighbour etc.

Is WiFi necessary for VPN?

VPN can work without WiFi only if there's an alternative Internet connection active, such as Ethernet or a mobile data plan. If you're wondering if you can use a VPN without an Internet connection, the answer is no. A virtual private network service cannot replace an Internet connection.

Does mobile VPN secure the files and data of mobile phones?

Yes. A VPN on mobile data will encrypt and secure a connection so that your cellular internet traffic is protected from being sniffed by the mobile network provider or third parties. It can be used anywhere where the internet is accessible. It is widely used to browse privately not only on your laptop but on mobile devices as well.

Where should I connect my mobile VPN, mobile data, or wifi?

The data connection allows you to connect as many devices as you want, and it is usually faster than WIFI. It is typically easier to set up than WIFI, too, which means less time spent trying to figure out how to get your phone online. Mobile VPN when you are using Wi-Fi. This is because a cybercriminal could set up a fake Wi-Fi hotspot and trick you into using it. The mobile VPN will encrypt your data to keep it private when using public Wi-Fi. You can use WIFI or a data connection. The decision comes down to the type of activities you're performing on your phone: -If you are only using the internet and don't need to download/stream anything, then go with a data connection. -If you're downloading/streaming videos through apps like Netflix, then go with a data connection. -If you want to use multiple devices on a single connection (like a laptop), then you should use wifi.

What applications work properly when using mobile VPN?

Generally, all the apps on your phone or tablet should work with VPNs. Some services block traffic from VPN servers to enforce a geographical restriction. However, you can normally bypass this by changing to another server location with your VPN provider. Today's top 3 best mobile VPN apps:

1. ExpressVPN has the best mobile VPN apps. ExpressVPN has the speed, security and simplicity of use that really makes it stand out from the crowd.

2. NordVPN - well-featured and popular mobile VPN. NordVPN's popularity is not unfounded.

3. Surfshark - bargain VPN for your mobile.

What restriction does a mobile VPN have to a mobile phone?

VPNs allow you to connect your devices to a remote server to access the internet from the remote server's servers. So, if your data plan allows you to have unlimited data-tonight, you don't have to worry about going over your data limit. Another benefit of a VPN is that it allows you privacy while you're browsing the Web. Your ISP can't see what you're accessing on the internet, and neither can your coffee shop's wireless. The main limitation VPNs have is that they aren't so great for downloading files. Since they're generally used for accessing the internet, a VPN can't do a lot of downloading. If you need a VPN to download, it's possible to find a server that allows that.
