What makes Inkscape different?

What sets Inkscape apart from the rest is that Inkscape takes pride in being a completely conformant SVG editor. It also enables rendering of SVG attributes that aren't formally part of the standard yet, but have achieved a stable state in the SVG Working Group's draft for SVG 2.0 as of March 2015.

What is Inkscape?

For GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS X, Inkscape is a free and open-source vector graphics editor. It has a lot of functionality and is used for cartoons, clip art, logos, typography, diagramming, and flowcharting, among other things. The use of Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), as the native format distinguishes Inkscape.

What is “vector graphics”?

Inkscape saves its images in a vector format, unlike raster ("bitmap") graphics editors like Photoshop or GIMP. The actual forms and objects that you see in the picture are described in vector graphics, which is a resolution-independent description. This information is used by a rasterization engine to figure out how to draw each line and curve at any resolution or zoom level.

What operating systems does Inkscape support?

We provide source tarballs for Linux , as well as flatpak and snap packages for Ubuntu, a ppa for Windows (32bit and 64bit, portable program), and Mac OS X packages (DMG, also MacPorts, Homebrew provided by community members). Inkscape is known to work well on FreeBSD and other Unix-like operating systems.

What formats can Inkscape import/export?

SVG, SVGZ (gzipped SVG), PDF, EPS, and AI are just a few of the formats that Inkscape can read or import natively. Inkscape can also import CDR (CorelDraw) and VSD (Visio) files natively as of version 0.91. Inkscape can accept most raster formats as bitmap images (JPEG, PNG, GIF, and so on), but it can only output PNG bitmaps.

Is Inkscape ready for regular users?

Yes! While Inkscape may not yet have all of the features of the top vector editors, the newest versions do provide a lot of fundamental vector graphics editing functionality. Inkscape has been said to work well in a broad range of vocations and pastimes, including online graphics, technical diagrams, icons, creative art, logos, and maps.

Can users get rid of anti-aliasing in the Inkscape drawing app?

It is not feasible to fully eliminate anti-aliasing with the present renderer. On the other hand, it is possible to suppress it partly during export. Make sure your horizontal and vertical borders are snapped on the pixel grid, and that all strokes are the same width. Then, export the bitmap at the default resolution of 90dpi, such that 1 px unit equals 1 bitmap pixel.

Can users create animations with Inkscape?

Inkscape does not yet support SVG animation. It's for 2-D static graphics. Inkscape, on the other hand, can export graphics for use in Flash or GIF animations. Blender has been able to input SVG data and extrude it to create 3D images since February 2006.

Is it possible to add a gradient to a stroke such that it bends along with it?

A gradient can be painted on a stroke, but it will not bend with the stroke. It'll either stay linear or elliptic. Blur, perhaps in conjunction with clipping, may be used in Inkscape to simulate similar effects. Another option is to use the Blend extension to blend two curved pathways with different colors or opacity levels.

What does "Scalable Vector Graphics" mean in Inkscape?

The W3C created Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), an open, industry-standard XML-based format for vector graphics. Its popularity is rapidly increasing. SVG can now be imported and exported from most vector editors, and contemporary browsers (such as Firefox and Opera) can display it without the need for plugins.
